Introduction:
You
might recognize RETRO
69 as the hosts of the seasonal Woodstock 69
- Monterey Pop Tributes that have been hitting Long
Island clubs every few months recently. After
a few years of working the Long Island /Rockaway
club circuit, the group has recently found
its niche promoting and hosting these events that
feature 12-15 bands covering music that was
performed at these music festivals in the late
60’s. But don’t be fooled,
this group is a lot more than just a bunch of flower
children.
Originally
founded in 1995, it now features Motown
Stax Records
sideman Earl Shelton, who has logged more than 30
years experience with Motown greats such as
Smokey Robinson, Ben E King, the Temptations, the Fatback
Band, Tom
Jones, and many others. Tom
Jones, and many others.
Recently,
the band has teamed up with a group of female lead
vocalists such as the Janis Joplin influenced Halley
DeVestern ,
the energetic versatile Meech,
and Dublin's Own Audrey
Nordstrom. In fact, Halley
DeVestern has had the opportunity to perform mant
times as lead singer of the current Big
Brother and the Holding Company!
The
band’s unique ability to fuse the 60’s psychedelic
flavor with blues influences gives it the rich
versatility and a wide genre of material. The Hammond
organ, fuzz reverb guitar, and unique Motown
influenced vocals creates a vibe that can’t be
missed.
Their
versatile sound takes the audience on a trip through
the Motown days, then to Woodstock, back again to the
Downtown New York Blues Scene of Dan Lynch and Manny’s
Carwash. Most of all, the crowd is kept on their feet
dancing, but at the same time, manages to keep the
volume and dynamics under control.
Their
repertoire includes cover versions of the ALMAN
BROTHERS, HENDRIX,
SANTANA, ROLLING
STONES, DRIFTERS,
JAMES BROWN, JOE COCKER,
RAY CHARLES, SMOKEY ROBINSON,
TEMPTATIONS, SAM COOK, WILSON PICKET, OTIS
REDDING, Aretha
Franklin, Koko
Taylor, Janis Joplin, and much more.

Band
Members:
Allan:
(Hammond Organ, Electric Piano, Business
Manager and Booking Agent)
Allan has
been very busy latly coordinating and promotinig the various
Retrofests and benifit concerts.. The music business is hard, and
getting harder, so finding such a wonderful, loyal, hard working
team has been the best surprise of the project so far. As
the man responsible for bookings and all logistical details,
its a wonder Allan finds the business less stressful than one might
expect . When not with his wife and two little boys, he can
often be found at one of the area pubs drinking a pint of
Guiness and promoting the band. Allan's only connection to
famous musicians was meeting Paul Simon in bathroom of
Zen Pallet in NYC and discussing a past 1983 concert in
Tel Aviv.
Garry
Inglesi:
(Lead
Vocals, Electric Guitar)
Gary
has been a long time fixture in the Long Island blues
scene. For many years he has been working the local
club circuit with bands such as “Touch of Blues”,
and has been written up several times in the local
Long Island press.
Garry is the logistics core of
the band, provding the PA and much support. Without him,
there would be no Retro69.
Earl
Shelton:
(Lead Vocals, Tenor Sax, Flute, Organ, Piano)
Earl
brings over 45 years of performing experience,
performing with
Motown and Blues greats such as BB King, the
Temptations, Ben
E King, Gladys Night and the Pips, Tom Jones, and
Smokey Robinson.
One
of the most notable New York funk groups to emerge in
the wake of James Brown's revolutionary sonic
experiments was The Fatback Band, whose earthy,
energetic brand of exuberant party funk guaranteed a
good time. The Blue Waves have been blessed to have
the opportunity to work with Earl as our Front man/Sax
player.
Lenny Nelson
(Full Time
Bassist)
Lenny Nelson has been a fixture on the New York City
club scene for more years than he can remember, having played with
Ronnie Spector, Chuck Berry, Roberta Flack, Shirley Alston Reeves,
Buzzy Linhart, and many others. He has also worked with a host of
great blues artists including Pinetop Perkins, Rosco Gordon,
Danny Kalb, Big Jay McNeely, and Shemekia
Copeland.
John Wagner, Tom of the
Haley DeVestern
Band"
Dave Ball, George Gelish, Sal
Congeme
(The
Backup Bass Team )
Mr. Wagner has been playing that big ol' string bass since
the age of 10 years old. He has played in various school stage
productions as well as the stage band. Presently, he is performing
with the Queensborough symphonic group. John always has his fingers
in several projects, his most recent brush with fame was playing for
The Bossa Nova Beatniks. Mr. Wagner is a veteran in every sense of
the word
George
Gelish
has recently joined the
band as occasional bass player. His vocals and stage personality
have taken REtro69 to a new level, and we look forward to having him
on more shows soon.
Mike
Miller
(Full Time Drummer,
Percussion)
Unlike
some of the others in Retro69, Mike
Miller has a Jazz and R&B background, getting into blues and
rock during the past 7-10 years. He has the chance to play at both
the old Birdland on 106th street and the now defunct R&B club
Mikells in NYC off Columbus Avenue and 97th street His most famous
gig was one with the Latin Jazz Great Dave Valentin. Mike is
another loyal wingman of the band, rare these days in the
industry.
And yes, Mike has also has had the opportunity to work with
Danny Kalb of the Blues
Project.
Herb
of the Mondays, Michael
Latansio,
John Warburton
(The
Backup Drummer Team )
Not
only do Mike and company provide
tight, no nonsense, efficient timing for the
rhythm section, but there enthusiasm and great
attitude has helped keep the band’s vibe a positive
and supportive one. In fact, it is this positive
supportive attitude that
all the members share, that has been a major
factor in the band’s
ongoing success.
Female
Lead Vocalists:
Halley
DeVestern (Lead Vocals)
Halley
has appeared at festivals across the United States, and as the
fill-in lead singer with famed bands like Big Brother &
the
Holding Company. Appearing
with Retro69 on 7/15 and 7/23.
And by
coincidence, Danny Kalb of the Blues Project
lives blocks away from Halley and was her music teacher years
back.

Halley
DeVestern
was born in Long Island,
NY. Just before she hit her teens, her parents bought her a
guitar and paid for her to take lessons. They probably never
dreamed she would stick with them, much less one day make a
successful career out of her music. After high school,
DeVestern attended the Boston University School of Theater
Arts, temporarily switching her attention toward acting. She
won some parts, but her love for music never subsided. In the
end she couldn't resist returning to it. She began to perform
when and where ever she could. Slowly she built a fan base,
and the courage needed to put everything she had into making
it as a singer in a world of music that offered no kindness to
those not strong enough to hold on. DeVestern put together a
band of her own in 1996.
A year later she at
last finished her debut full-length album, Sugar Free. "I'll
Light Myself on Fire," "The Family Way," "Ring of Love," "They
Ain't Got the Ways," and "I'm Over It" are a few of the ten
tracks fans will find on this first offering. Her next album
didn't appear for four long years. It was titled Live at the
Towpath Inn. In between recording, DeVestern traveled with her
band, appearing at festivals across the United States, and as
lead singer with famed bands like Big Brother & the
Holding Company. She also opened for a number of artists,
including Jimmie Vaughan, Little Buster, and John Hammond.
Over the last few years DeVestern and her music have received
a lot of positive press, including write-ups in magazine like
Good Times, Billboard, and Seventeen. Some of DeVestern's band
members have been bassist Jon Sobel, drummers Ray Crespo and
Rodney Howard, guitarists Jeffrey Lee Campbell and Jimi Crespo
(who worked with Aerosmith and Bonnie Bramlett), and
keyboardists Jeff Kazee and Rima Fand. ~ Charlotte Dillon, All

Audrey Nordstrom (Lead
Vocals)
Audrey hails from Dublin, useful when
Allan starts to play Wild Rover and Moonshiner, but she has
been fronting energetic R&B and Rock bands for over 20
years. She has been performing at some of the larger clubs in
the city and Long Island, and brings confidence and
easygoingness to the stage. Allan, of course, has a pisser
chatting on the phone with Audrey, and as a result is looking
to boost his Verizon minutes allotted. That last bill was a
bit steep.
Meech (Lead
Vocals)
Not to be confused with Michy (another very
talented singer on her own; visit www.MichyG.com Meech has
captivated audiences many times before with a solid technical
voice and a great show that was appreciated big time by the
Breezy Point crowd.
